The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood Hargrave Review

The Dance Tree is the second adult novel by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Mercies. I loved The Mercies so I couldn’t wait to read this one. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy from Netgalley. The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood Hargrave Review: Plot This book is set during the real-life dancing plague of 1518 in Strasbourg. In the midst of a blistering hot summer, one lone woman, starving and living in poverty, starts to dance. She dances for days without pause or rest, and as she is joined by hundreds of others, the authorities declare an emergency. The women are dancing until their feet bleed,…

The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue Review

The Pull of the Stars is the latest novel by Emma Donoghue, author of the fantastically moving modern classic Room. The Pull of the Stars was released in 2020 and was featured in The Guardian, Cosmopolitan and Telegraph’s ‘Books of the Year’. It was also a Richard and Judy book club pick. I loved Room and found it moving as well as gripping. I was therefore really excited to read this one. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller Review

I recently read Circe by Madeline Miller and it was one of the best books I’ve read. I was therefore excited to read her debut novel, The Song of Achilles. It won various awards including The Women’s Prize for Fiction and has sold over 1.5 million copies. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller Review: Plot Achilles is the son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus and is destined to be the Greek’s greatest warrior. He is strong, swift, and beautiful, making him irresistible to all who meet him. In comparison, Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland and sent to live…

Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart Review

I was a bit late to the party when it comes to Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. It’s a book that sat on my bookcase for a long time before I finally decided to read it. I think after seeing it discussed on Between The Covers and hearing how bleak it was, I felt I had to be in the right frame of mind before I began it. It’s been a hugely successful novel and has won multiple awards including the 2020 Booker Prize and Book of The Year at the British Book Awards. Not bad for a debut novel! Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart Review: Plot The book is…

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara Review

A Little Life is a hugely successful novel by Hanya Yanagihara. It was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2015 and is a million-copy bestseller. If I’m honest, it’s a book I’d been putting off reading. At 736 pages I knew it wasn’t going to be a quick read. I saw it discussed on Between The Covers as Nish Kumar spoke about it as a book that had made a lasting impression on him. My friend then told me it was the best book she’s ever read so I knew I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about.  A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara Review:…
