I’m a big fan of the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and my daughter loves them too. They, along with the Little People Big Dreams series, are perfect reads for empowering young children. We loved Rebel Girls Lead which told the story of many powerful women from all walks of life.

This book is the ultimate celebration of Black Girl Magic. CaShawn Thompson came up with the concept “Black Girls Are Magic” when she was a little girl growing up with her mother, grandmother, and aunts. She was a young black girl who didn’t yet have the words to describe the brilliance she saw in the women in her family. She just believed they were magic. The phrase become popular online and was later shortened to #BlackGirlMagic. The phrase (and hashtag) is used to uplift and praise the accomplishments, beauty, and other amazing qualities of black women.

The book celebrates a diverse range of black women and highlights their achievements. There were many I had heard of, such as Amanda Gorman, Aretha Franklin and Naomi Osaka, but so many others I hadn’t. The fact there were so many amazingly accomplished women I had never heard of, shows just how under-appreciated and overlooked they have been. These women have made significant contributions to our world and I was horrified by how many I wasn’t familiar with. There were women I did know, but I wasn’t aware of their individual stories and what led them to become inspiring leaders, champions, innovators, and creators.
These stories are so inspiring. I have spoken to my children at length about racism and the importance of being an ally. My kids also understand the importance of representation. These women and their stories are so inspirational for children and adults regardless of ethnicity or gender.
The stories appear in alphabetical order so it’s easy to find a particular one. Each story fills just one page and the illustrations are bold and eye-catching.
This is a wonderfully inclusive book that I would recommend to anyone.
