Rebel Girls Lead: 25 Tales of Powerful Women

Part of the award-winning Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series, Rebel Girls Lead celebrates women leaders in politics, business, sports, activism in an accessible way aimed at children.

I love the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls books and I’m always looking for inspiring reads for my children. These real-life female leaders are such an inspiration to young minds (and older minds too!) I’ve read them with my sons as well as my daughter as it’s important for the boys to also see the incredible achievements these women have made.

I love the diverse range of women featured in the book, from Kamala Harris and Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Lady Gaga and Cleopatra. Quite the eclectic mix!

There are 25 stories in total, some of which also feature in the first books in the Rebel Girls series, the other 11 are brand new tales of women’s activism, bravery, and vision. I’d have preferred it if they were all brand new stories as some of them, as fans of the series, we’d seen before.

I love how the real-life adventures of these women are told in fairytale format, with the “once upon a time” beginnings. It’s a book that’s easy to dip in and out of, with just one page dedicated to each story. The illustrations are fantastic using vibrant and eye-catching colours.

The book has a recommended reader age of six to nine years which I would say is fair. I read the stories with my (just turned) 6-year-old whereas my older children can read them independently. There’s a section at the end where you can write your own story and complete some quizzes to help you to find your own rebel girl qualities. These practical exercises are perfect for inspiring older children.

The book would make a perfect gift for any child, regardless of gender.

A brilliant, inspiring book.
