Plot
When Alex and Poppy met at college 12 years ago, there was a massive personality clash. Where Poppy was outgoing and vivacious, Alex was quiet and introverted. They disliked each other instantly and were pretty confident they wouldn’t be meeting again.
A year on, they are forced to share a car journey and despite their differences, they form a very unlikely friendship. They also make a pact, every year they would go on vacation together.
They stick to this pact and over the years enjoy several memorable holidays. However, two years ago everything changes, and their friendship is left in tatters.
This year, Poppy invites Alex on one last trip, desperate to mend their friendship. Little do they know, this trip will have a lasting effect on the rest of their lives.
You and Me on Vacation Book Review
This is the second Emily Henry book I have read and whilst I didn’t love it quite as much as Book Lovers, it was still a great read.
I really liked the two main characters, Poppy and Alex. Poppy was sassy and fun yet had a real vulnerability to her.
Alex, meanwhile, was just a dream. I loved him. A strong, handsome man who was as far from an alpha male as you could get. He had anxiety, loved reading, and was an introvert. I honestly adored him, possibly because many of his personality traits reminded me of my husband!
I love how Emily Henry writes dialogue. It feels so realistic and I just love all the flirty banter between the characters. I also loved the different locations and the switches in the timeline were handled really well.
Emily Henry also handles compromise between characters really well. Both this book and Book Lovers contained strong women and I loved that neither character had to completely change their personalities to get what they want.
Book Lovers had the enemies to lovers trope while this one had the old favourite, friends to lovers. You’d think these tropes have been done to death but the author still manages to put a fresh spin on them.
Overall, this book was witty and fun and put a fresh spin on the friends to lovers trope. It’s the perfect holiday read and still manages to pack an emotional punch.
What to Read Next
If you enjoyed You and Me on Vacation, I would definitely recommend reading Emily Henry’s other novels. I particularly enjoyed Book Lovers.
If you’re looking try a different author, I would recommend the romance books by Lucy Score. They’re a bit spicier but do contain a lof of the same wit and banter. I’d recommend Tessa Bailey’s books for a similar reason.
