Plot
Daphne always loved how her fiancé Peter told their story, from meeting on a blustery day to moving to his lakeside hometown. But everything changed when Peter realised he loved his childhood friend Petra instead.
Now, Daphne finds herself in Waning Bay, Michigan, with a dream job as a children’s librarian that barely pays the bills. She becomes roommates with Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak, who is scruffy and chaotic—completely different from the practical Daphne.
Initially, they avoid each other, but soon they bond over their heartbreak, form a friendship, and devise a plan that includes posting misleading photos of their adventures. Despite their efforts, Daphne starts to wonder if she might be falling for Miles, her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex.
Funny Story Book Review
Funny Story provides yet another reason why Emily Henry is my favourite romance author. Her books are always highly anticipated, not just by me, but by all fans of contemporary romance, and it’s so easy to see why.
In Funny Story, Emily Henry strikes a perfect balance of heartache, tension, angst and humour. The chemistry between Daphne and Miles is so natural, lovely and believable that you can’t help but root for them. Both characters are flawed, confused and relatable, which makes their journey all the more engaging.
Daphne’s practicality contrasted wonderfully with Miles’ scruffy, chaotic nature. Their shared heartbreak and growing friendship make their connection feel so authentic. Miles, in particular, was such a kind and lovable character and I loved how supportive he was of Daphne.
The story is well-paced, and as with all Emily Henry books, I found myself flying through it. I enjoyed the ending and the slow-burn romance was perfectly executed.
Funny Story is another brilliant book by Emily Henry and I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next.
