Plot
Brothers Nathan and Bub Bright meet at the fence line separating their cattle ranches in the Australian outback, finding their third brother, Cameron, dead. Cameron, who ran the family homestead, had ventured out alone under the scorching sun.
As Nathan, Bub, and Nathan’s son return to Cameron’s ranch, they join his grieving family. Suspicion grows, and Nathan must confront long-buried family secrets, knowing that the remote isolation leaves few suspects if Cameron’s death was not by his own hand.
The Lost Man Book Review
I love a character-driven mystery and nobody does them better than Jane Harper. The Lost Man is a masterpiece of atmospheric storytelling and character development.
Jane Harper also has an incredible talent for creating a vivid sense of place. The harsh, unforgiving landscape of the outback is brought to life with such detail that you can almost feel the relentless sun and the vast emptiness surrounding the characters. It creates the perfect backdrop for the mystery.
Nathan, the protagonist, is a flawed yet sympathetic character. In that regard he reminds me of Aaron Falk. Jane Harper delves into Nathan’s past and present struggles, painting a poignant picture of isolation and redemption. The supporting characters are equally well-drawn, each with their own complexities and secrets that made me suspect them all at one point!
I really enjoyed the mystery itself and appreciated how the author was able to explore themes of family, guilt, and forgiveness. The pacing is perfect, with tension building steadily as more is revealed about Cameron’s life and the circumstances leading up to his death.
Overall, The Lost Man is a beautifully novel that cements Jane Harper’s place as my favourite mystery author.
What to read next
I would definitely recommend reading Jane Harper’s other standalone novel, The Survivors. The Aaron Falk series was also absolutely brilliant, so I would also recommend reading all three of those.
