London, April 1943. Twenty-five-year-old Emmy Lake is doing her part for the war effort by spearheading the hugely popular “Yours Cheerfully” advice column in Woman’s Friend magazine. The postbags are full, Emmy’s guidance offers much needed support to her readers, and Woman’s Friend is thriving. Cheered on by her best friends Bunty and Thelma, and resolute in the absence of her husband who is fighting in the army, Emmy is dedicated to helping women face the increasing challenges brought about by over three years of war.

But Emmy’s world is turned upside down when glamorous socialite, the Honorable Cressida Porter, becomes the new publisher of the magazine, and wants to change everything about it. Aided by Mrs. Pye, a Paris-obsessed editor with delusions of grandeur, and Small Winston, the grumpiest dog in London, Mrs. Porter fills the pages with expensive fashions and frivolous articles about her friends. Worst of all, she announces that she is cutting the advice column. Her vision for the publication’s future is dreadful and Emmy is determined to fight back.

Emmy and her friends must save the magazine they love, but when personal tragedy strikes, they are forced to face the very real implications of life in war-torn London.

Mrs Porter Calling Review: My Opinion

I really enjoyed the first two books in the Emmy Lake Chronicles, but I’d go as far as saying this is my favourite. The writing sparkles, balancing light-hearted moments with some genuinely devastating ones. I definitely shed a tear or two.

It was great to be reunited with the plucky heroines we got to know in the first two books. Their resilience and kindness shine amid the challenges of war-torn London, reminding me why I fell in love with these characters in the first place. Emmy and her friends continue to be such relatable and likeable characters, facing their struggles with strength and humour.

Mrs. Cressida Porter is a fantastic addition to the mix. She’s a complete contrast to the other characters – self-serving and determined to impose her vision on the magazine. She’s definitely had that Professor Umbridge vibe, coming across as sickly sweet on the outside but really odious inside. It made for some entertaining and infuriating moments!

My favourite thing about this series is the character of these women as they fight for what they believe in. Despite the harsh realities of their circumstances, they maintain a sense of optimism that is truly inspiring. It’s heart-warming to see how they support each other and push back against adversity.

At its heart, this story is more than just a wartime tale. It’s a celebration of friendship, resilience, and kindness. I’m really hoping there’s another book in the series as I’m praying for some happy endings!
