In the Likely Event Review: My Opinion
This was my first Rebecca Yarros book, and honestly, I didn’t love it. I know she has military connections, but the whole American white saviour narrative left a sour taste for me. It just felt uncomfortable, especially when paired with the setting.
I couldn’t get over the fact that there was a romantic subplot involving sex in a war camp. It felt so out of place. People are dying, suffering, and struggling, and the focus shifts to the main characters’ angsty romance. The decision to set a second chance, enemies-to-lovers romance in the middle of an actual war zone just felt tone-deaf.
Izzy, the main character, claimed she was trying to save her sister, but her actions were more self-absorbed than heroic. She’s a civilian with no real training, making her involvement feel misguided at best. I found her irritating, and Nate came across as a stereotypical love interest, so I never really cared about the romance or the characters.
In the end, I just couldn’t connect with the story. The romance felt forced, and the setting didn’t do it any favours.
