In the early 18th century, after being dismissed from his prestigious London post, Dr. Henry Talbot accepts a mysterious job offer in rural Wales. At the isolated Plas Helyg estate, he faces hostile villagers and uncovers the suspicious death of his predecessor.
With the help of Linette, Lord Julian’s unconventional cousin, Henry delves into the village’s dark secrets. Linette, defying societal norms and caring for the oppressed miners, has long suspected something amiss.

The Shadow Key Book Review
The Shadow Key is a gripping tale of mystery, magic, and unbreakable bonds that had me hooked from the first page.
I haven’t read many historical books set in Wales and the gothic setting of the estate was a refreshing change. The village was shrouded in Welsh folklore and occult mysteries, making it the perfect backdrop for a story filled with creepy and disturbing moments.
I love Susan Stokes-Chapman’s writing style and her vivid descriptions brought the Welsh landscape and its sinister secrets to life. The plot is full of twists and turns and kept me guessing right up to the end.
I really liked Henry as a character with his determination and logical approach to unravelling the mystery. But it was Linette who truly stood out for me. She’s fiercely independent, refusing to conform to society’s expectations of her as a woman, yet she also has a vulnerable side that makes her incredibly relatable. Her dynamic with Henry added depth and warmth to the story.
Overall, I really enjoyed the blend of mystery, dark secrets and mythology, and I’m looking forward to reading what Susan Stokes-Chapman writes next.
