Book Review: The Sight Of You by Holly Miller

The Sight of You by Holly Miller was published in 2020 and was a Richard and Judy book club pick.

The Sight of You was Holly Miller’s debut novel and was billed as a love story like no other. I love an unforgettable romance so I was keen to see if it lived up to the hype.

Plot

The Sight Of You by Holly Miller is the story of Joel and Callie. Joel has visions revealing the good and the bad that lie ahead for those he loves. He meets Callie who is grieving the death of her best friend. She realises she needs to start being more spontaneous and live her life fully.

Together, they both need a reason to start living for today and from the moment they meet each other, it seems life-changing…until Joel has a vision of how it’s going to end.

The Sight Of You Book Review

The story is told from both Hallie and Joel’s perspectives and I found the characters to be almost a little too perfect. Other than Joel’s issue with his dreams, neither seem to have any real flaws and so they weren’t overly relatable. They were a bit too sweet and Joel was a truly selfless, humble hero! Having said that, I did still root for them both.

It was heart-wrenching in parts but also thought-provoking. It made me wonder what I would do in a similar situation. Would I want to know what the future holds? I’m not sure I would!

It’s a sad story but also quite a hopeful one. It shows the impact one person can have on another’s life and how there’s more than one way to experience happiness.

I enjoyed the book and it was definitely different to other romances I’ve read. However, I just felt it lacked something. It became a little stale in places and I didn’t love it as much as I’d hoped. However I did really enjoy the ending and it was beautifully written, particularly for a debut. I’d definitely read more of Holly Miller’s future work.

Holly Miller is also the author of What Might Have Been and upcoming novel, The Spark.

What should I read after The Sight Of You?

If you enjoy Holly Miller’s writing style, I’d recommend you also read her second novel What Might Have Been. If you’re looking for another poignant romance to pull on your heartstring, I’d also recommend Only Love Can Hurt Like This by Paige Toon.
