Plot
Knox, a bearded and independent bad-boy barber, prefers a solitary life. His only companion is his basset hound, Waylon. He avoids drama at all costs, even when a runaway bride named Naomi enters his life.
Naomi ran away from her wedding to rescue her estranged twin sister in Knockemout, Virginia, a tough town known for settling disputes with fists and beer. Her twin, Tina, leaves her in a difficult situation, including an unexpected niece. Now Naomi is stranded in town with no car, no job, no plan, and a precocious 11-year-old to care for.
Knox, who avoids complicated and high-maintenance women, decides to help Naomi since her life fell apart in front of him. He plans to assist her and then return to his peaceful, solitary existence.
However, as Naomi continues to find trouble, the situation becomes more dangerous than he expected.
Things We Never Got Over Book Review
I thought Things We Never Got Over was a great opening book of the Knockemout series. It was the perfect holiday read.
It had everything I enjoy in a romance novel:
- Enemy to lovers trope ✅
- A redeemable bad boy ✅
- Spice ✅
- Swoon-worthy romance ✅
- Drama and intrigue ✅
- Alternating POV ✅
At 570 pages, it’s much longer than most other romance novels I’ve read but the author has packed so much into story that it never felt tiresome. I like that there was drama mixed into the romance story which really elevated the plot.
The small town setting really worked and I enjoy reading a series where you know characters are going to keep occurring. I enjoyed the introduction of characters that will appear in novels later in the series
Knox was prickly and a rule breaker which contrasted perfectly against Naomi’s kind nature. The dialogue between them sparkled and had the witty banter that I enjoy in Emily Henry’s novels. Knox wasn’t overly likeable at times but I’m glad he redeemed himself towards the end.
Overall, I enjoyed my first Lucy Score book. It was a long read but I enjoyed the exploration of messy families and friendships and I’m looking forward to reading more about the characters of Knockemout.
What to read next
If you enjoyed Things We Never Got Over, I’d definitely recommend completing the Knockemout Series.
If you’re looking for other romance authors were a similar writing style I’d recommend Tessa Bailey and Meghan Quinn books.
