I really enjoyed Sophie Irwin’s debut novel A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting. It was a Sunday Times bestseller and I found it to be the perfect blend of wit, historical romance and great story telling.
I was therefore really excited to read Sophie Irwin’s latest novel, A Lady’s Guide to Scandal. It promised to be another witty Regency romance and I was hoping the story would be as engaging and fun as her first book.

Plot
After a decade of a less-than-ideal marriage to the stern Earl of Somerset, widowed Eliza Balfour finds herself liberated, wealthy, and determined to seize control of her destiny. Intent on breaking societal norms, she embarks on a journey to Bath with her cousin, pursuing art, driving, and indulging in flirtations.
However, her newfound freedom sparks repercussions, especially when it comes to her past heartbreak involving her late husband’s nephew.
As Eliza navigates the balance between enjoying her autonomy and avoiding scandal, she discovers that true freedom comes with its own set of challenges and consequences.
A Lady’s Guide to Scandal Book Review
A Lady’s Guide to Scandal is another fantastic book by Sophie Irwin.
As a Jane Austen fangirl I couldn’t help but notice the nod to Persuasion. The quote at the start of the story set the tone for what turned out to be a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, where the heroine evolves into a stronger, more assertive version of herself.
The story follows Eliza, a character who seemed a little too meek at the start of the story. However, I found this to be a deliberate choice by the author. It allowed room for character development and, as the plot unfolded, I witnessed Eliza’s growth and the gradual assertion of her independence. This again was similar to the development of Anne’s character in Persuasion.
While this 19th century romance had both Austen and Bridgerton vibes, it distinguishes itself by incorporating a modern and feminist perspective. The story is not just a romance but a tale of a woman discovering her true self, pursuing her desires, and defying societal expectations.
The supporting characters in the novel also contribute significantly to its charm. Eliza’s cousin, Margaret, stood out as a funny and loyal companion, adding a fun dynamic to the story. I loved her honesty and wit and hoped for a happy ending for her as well as Eliza.
I’m not usually a huge fan of the love triangle trope but it was delivered really well. There are two completely contrasting male characters, creating a real dilemma for Eliza. The question of who she should choose lingers throughout the story and I definitely had my favourite. What can I say? I like a bad boy!
