Must-Read Books for Fans of Jane Austen

As a huge fan of Jane Austen‘s timeless wit and keen social insights, I’m always on the lookout for books that capture a similar spirit.

Some retellings are really best to be avoided as not all adaptations of Austen’s works or attempts to capture her style are successful. However there are some brilliant novels that really capture her essence and have become must-read books for fans of Jane Austen.

Whether they delve into Jane Austen’s own life, offer fresh perspectives on her characters, or simply emulate her sharp storytelling, the following novels provide a delightful journey into the world of regency romance and beyond.

Miss Austen by Gill Hornby

Gill Hornby’s Miss Austen is a heartfelt exploration of the life of Jane Austen’s sister, Cassandra.

Through beautifully crafted prose, Hornby reveals the depth of the bond between the sisters and how Cassandra’s love and sacrifices may have shaped Jane’s works.

Godmersham Park by Gill Hornby

In Godmersham Park, Gill Hornby strikes gold again with another engaging historical fiction.

This time, the novel centres on Anne Sharp, the governess at Godmersham Park, where Jane Austen’s brother Edward resided.

Through Anne’s eyes, we see the intricacies of the Austen family and gain new insights into Jane’s inspirations.

The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow

Ever wondered what happened to Mary Bennet, the often-overlooked middle sister in Pride and Prejudice?

Janice Hadlow’s The Other Bennet Sister grants Mary the spotlight she deserves.

This novel traces Mary’s journey from awkward obscurity to self-assured independence, providing a richly satisfying arc for a character who often fades into the background.

Longbourn by Jo Baker

Longbourn by Jo Baker offers a refreshing take on Pride and Prejudice by shifting the focus to the servants of the Bennet household.

Through the eyes of Sarah, a housemaid, Baker masterfully interweaves the familiar narrative with the gritty realities of those who lived below stairs.

This novel is a brilliant reimagining that adds depth and context to the world of the Bennets.

A Lady’s Guide to Scandal by Sophie Irwin

If you’re in the mood for a bit of mischief and intrigue, A Lady’s Guide to Scandal by Sophie Irwin delivers.

This novel is a lively romp filled with scandalous secrets and romantic escapades, all set against the backdrop of regency society.

The witty dialogue and cleverly plotted twists make it a delightful read for anyone who enjoys Austen’s blend of humour and social commentary.

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

For a modern twist on a classic, Curtis Sittenfeld’s Eligible is a must-read.

This contemporary retelling of “Pride and Prejudice” transports the Bennet family to present-day Cincinnati.

Curtis Sittenfeld‘s sharp, humorous writing captures the essence of Austen’s characters while offering a fresh take on their stories. It’s a brilliant homage that feels both familiar and entirely new.

The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn

The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn is a unique blend of historical fiction and science fiction.

Two time travelers from the future are sent back to 1815 to recover a lost Austen manuscript and perhaps even alter the course of literary history.

This imaginative and adventurous novel offers a fascinating interplay of past and future, wrapped in the charm of Austen’s world.

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

P.D. James combines her mastery of the detective genre with her love for Austen in Death Comes to Pemberley.

Set six years after the events of Pride and Prejudice, this novel thrusts Elizabeth and Darcy into the midst of a murder mystery.

James’s clever plotting and respect for the original characters make this a gripping and respectful continuation of Austen’s beloved work.
