I love reading books about love. Romantic love and familial love always pull me in but I always feel the love between friends can be just as poignant.
Friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts, bringing support, joy, and a sense of belonging. Reading books about friendship can remind us of the power of loyalty and the joy that comes from having someone by your side.
Here are some of my favourite books that celebrate the beauty of friendship.

The 100 Years of Lenni and Margot
The 100 Years of Lenni and Margot was Marianne Cronin’s debut novel and I absolutely loved it.
The story is about an extraordinary friendship between 17-year-old Lenni and 83-year-old Margot.
Lenni meets Margot, a rebel with a lifetime of stories, in a hospital art class. Together, they decide to paint their shared hundred years, celebrating love, loss, joy, and friendship.
We All Want Impossible Things
In We All Want Impossible Things, Catherine Newman tells the story of two lifelong best friends as they face the toughest of goodbyes. I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions that somehow left me feeling both heartbroken and uplifted.
As Edi is dying in hospice care, Ash spends her days with her, reliving their shared memories. This book captures the raw, unfiltered intimacy of friendship including the laughter, the tears, and the love.
Anne of Green Gables
I had to included “kindred spirits” Anne Shirley and Diana Barry! I recently re-read Anne of Green Gables and their friendship was just as heart-warming as I’d remembered from my childhood.
Their unwavering support for each other, through school mishaps, family dramas, and Anne’s endless adventures, make their friendship one of my favourites.
A Man Called Ove
A Man Called Ove features a grumpy, solitary man whose world is turned upside down when a lively young family moves in next door.
Through their persistence and kindness, unlikely friendships form, showing Ove the value of community and connection.
It’s a touching reminder that friendships can bloom in the most unexpected places.
The Lido
Libby Page’s novels celebrate intergenerational friendships and the power of community. In The Lido, a young journalist and an elderly swimmer team up to save their local pool.
The sequel, The Lifeline, follows a group of women who bond over a shared love of wild swimming. Both stories highlight how friendships can bring people together to create something meaningful.
Meredith Alone
In Meredith Alone, the titular character has been housebound for years, with her cat and online connections as her main company.
But as she starts to let people back into her life, unexpected friendships help her rediscover the outside world.
It’s a tender, uplifting story about how friendships can help us heal and grow.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
In Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Sam and Sadie’s friendship spans decades, starting as children bonding over video games and evolving into a creative partnership.
Their relationship is so complex and filled with love and rivalry. Sam and Sadie’s story explores how friendship can be as powerful and enduring as any romance.
Firefly Lane
In FireFly Lane, Kate and Tully are inseparable best friends who meet as teens in the 1970s. Over 30 years, their friendship weathers love, loss, and betrayal.
Kristin Hannah captures the beauty and challenges of a lifelong bond, showing that even the strongest friendships can be tested.
My Brilliant Friend
The first book in Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels follows Lila and Elena, two childhood friends growing up in a poor neighbourhood in Naples.
Their friendship is intense and often competitive, but it’s also a profound connection that shapes their lives in ways they could never predict.
Best of Friends
Zahra and Maryam grew up together in Karachi, but their lives diverged when they moved to London. Years later, their friendship is tested by secrets from their past.
Shamsie’s exploration of the complexities of friendship including how it evolves and what it can withstand, is both thought-provoking and beautifully written.
Us Three by Ruth Jones
This story of three childhood friends, Catrin, Judith, and Lana, is a celebration of female friendship. As they navigate the highs and lows of life, their bond is tested in ways they never imagined.
Ruth Jones captures the joy, heartache, and resilience that come with lifelong friendships.
The Giver of Stars
The Giver of Stars is set in Depression-era Kentucky and follows a group of women who deliver books as part of the Packhorse Library Project.
Through their shared mission, they form deep and transformative friendships, showing the strength that comes from supporting one another.
